[ Modeling in 3dsMax 4.0 ]

Quick notice about this tutorial

You'll understand that I can't explain and justify every single thing I do to build my samurai. Everything on the previous page usually take me 5 seconds to do, so I can only imagine how much time I'd take me to document a 8-hours long process. Instead, I'm only going to take screenshots and document what I'm doing when its something that I havnt mentioned yet.

The perspective view

Moving around objects is extermely easy to do:
To drag the camera and its target, use the mouse's middle button
To rotate around the camera's target, press alt + middle button
To zoom in and out, press Z and use the left mouse button

Scaling/moving vertices

First of all, notice that there is a small arrow below the scale icon. This mean that you will have additionnal tools if you press on it long enough:

Those are pretty straigh-forward so I assume I don't have to explain them. Me I want to perform a "non-uniform scale" on my cylinder to make it less circular and more like a torso:

You can use these tools both on objects and in sub-object mode. For this exemple, I'll just press 1 to go in sub-object vertex mode and then I'll select all of them. Once youve selected what you want to scale, click on either the Y or X arrow (or the corner to use both) and drag your mouse. Those arrows are really usefull and work just as well with the "translate" and "rotate" tools. If you can't select an arrow, you might have accidentaly removed them. Press X to bring them back.

Adding details

So I'm moving vertices around, minding my own business, when 45 seconds later... OH NO!! I don't nearly have enough vertices to model the cool neck I always wanted him to have! What can I do?!

First, press 2 to switch to subobject edge mode. Now, you'll see a bunch of strange buttons. Click on "divide" and put your left-hand on CTRL-Z to undo any mistake. 3dsMax kind of suck with divide, it'll often create the vertex on some edge hiding behind the geometry you're clicking on.. so you have to undo and try again. Anyway, I created 4 new vertices for his neck:

Yippee!
